My mom is interested in genealogy, and for several years has been researching her side of the family. She has information that goes back several hundred years, and it's really interesting to look at the list of people whose lives led to mine. There are lists of names and dates and places and relationships, and it's fascinating to see where I came from and who I came from. I wish, though, that I knew more about these Scottish and Welsh ancestors. I'm very interested in my Scwelsh heritage, you know.
Last Christmas, Mom showed me the information she'd recently gotten on Dad's dad's side of the family, the Hollands. It goes all the way back to the 1100s, and it has surprising little extras, such as the fact that one of my ancestors was born in the Tower of London and drowned in the English Channel. I love knowing that. It makes the list of names and places and dates more real for me, more personal. I feel more connected. And then I found a Wikipedia entry on one of them, John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter. How cool is that? The story of his life, laid out on the screen for me to read all these hundreds of years later. I'll be madly clicking links for until I run out of them, now.
This is where I'll record and store the information I find. I doubt it will be of much interest to anyone not related to me, so I'm limiting access to those who are.
